5 ways in which we deliver innovatively for the women and girls we serve across Asia and the Pacific

As we celebrate United Nations Day, here are five innovative ways in which UNFPA is transforming the lives of women & girls across Asia and the Pacific.

Thailand: 'SoSafe' Digital Platform

In partnership with TraffyFondue (a popular city management app) and key government agencies, UNFPA Thailand introduced 'SoSafe', a digital platform designed to address pressing social issues faced by women and girls, such as teenage pregnancy, domestic violence, and gender-based violence. The SoSafe platform allows individuals to confidentially report these issues while providing essential information on their rights and access to government support. With over 1,000 cases already addressed, 6,000+ government officials engaged across 14 provinces, and a reach of 580,000+ people, SoSafe is making a tangible difference, with plans underway for nationwide expansion.

Vietnam: #MpowerHer online campaign

Mpower her reach

UNFPA Viet Nam launched the #MpowerHer campaign, a pioneering initiative to address image-based abuse and empower the youth of Viet Nam earlier this year. Reaching over 417,000 people in just 7 days, the campaign engaged young participants through interactive activities, including quizzes, video scenarios, and personal stories, to help them identify, prevent, and respond to digital violence. The campaign's highlight was a #MpowerHer webinar with young leaders, which attracted 31,000 viewers. Through this initiative, young people gained practical skills to combat technology-facilitated gender-based violence, contributing to safer digital spaces. #MpowerHer is a powerful reminder that digital violence is real, but together, with joint efforts, we can build a more inclusive and safer digital world.

Papua New Guinea: Healthy farmers with Monpi Coffee Exports

Healthy farmers in Papua New Guinea

UNFPA Papua New Guinea and Monpi Coffee Exports Ltd., the largest coffee exporter in the Highlands, are working together to integrate sexual and reproductive health and rights into the coffee sector. This innovative partnership focuses on improving the health services in coffee-growing communities by leveraging existing infrastructure, reducing maternal mortality, and addressing gender-based violence. Through trainings and workshops, the programme has reached over 4,600 farmers — both men and women — empowering them with vital sexual and reproductive health knowledge, financial literacy, and mental health support. The partnership also includes launching a financial guarantee scheme for health, aimed at supporting sustainable livelihoods and creating lasting impact in the region.

Bangladesh and Myanmar: Cash to uphold dignity

As a critical component of UNFPA’s humanitarian response, the provision of dignity items ensures the health, safety, and empowerment of women, girls, and marginalized individuals during crises. To offer greater flexibility and autonomy, UNFPA Bangladesh and UNFPA Myanmar, piloted cash assistance programmes, allowing recipients to purchase culturally appropriate dignity items based on their specific needs. Through this innovative approach, in 2023, UNFPA Bangladesh provided cash assistance to over 4,000 women and transgender individuals affected by floods, restoring their sense of control and dignity. This approach not only addresses essential hygiene needs but also serves as a gateway to critical health and protection services, building resilience among vulnerable communities.

India: Technology for transformation

Banner of the project

UNFPA India, in collaboration with key partners, is harnessing the power of technology to transform the lives of women and girls across the country. Through the Digi Shakti initiative with the Odisha Government, over 6 million women from Women Self-Help Groups (WSHGs) will receive digital and financial literacy training, along with education on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), enabling their economic independence and empowerment. In Madhya Pradesh, the Digi Sakhi 2.0 program is training young girls in social media, video storytelling, and scriptwriting, empowering over 200 participants to challenge social norms. Meanwhile, the "Tech Sakhi: Voice of Change" initiative in Rajasthan is equipping girls with digital skills to advocate against harmful practices like child marriage. Through these initiatives, technology is unlocking new opportunities for women and girls in India, driving socio-economic growth and fostering change.
