State of the World Population Report 2025: The Real Fertility Crisis

Full report

Wellington

UNFPA’s flagship State of World Population Report 2025 was launched in New Zealand at a special event held in the Parliament, organized in partnership with the New Zealand Parliamentarians' Group on Population and Development (NZPPD) and Social Wellbeing Aotearoa. The launch brought together parliamentarians and development partners in New Zealand to discuss how reproductive agency, fertility aspirations, and inclusive systems are pivotal in upholding rights and choices across Asia and the Pacific, including in the country.

Speakers included Catherine Wedd MP, Chair of the NZPPD; Lemauga Lydia Sosene MP, Deputy Chair of the NZPPD, and Tomoko Kurokawa, UNFPA Regional Humantiarian Advisor for Asia and the Pacific, who delivered remarks on behalf of the UNFPA Regional Director, Pio Smith. The speakers highlighted the report’s central message - that realizing reproductive rights and choices for all is key to achieving equality and sustainable development - and underscored the need for policies grounded in evidence, equity, and human rights.

During the event, UNFPA also acknowledged New Zealand’s longstanding partnership and continued support to UNFPA, reflecting shared commitments to ensure that every person’s rights and choices are realized across Asia and the Pacific.
